Hey there Moonshiners! Hope everyone had a good Easter, and got so spend some quality family time with too much candy and board games!!
We unlocked a new Stretch Goal over the weekend, (Additional Money Cards in every copy of Moonshine Empire!) YAY!!
Our friends at Sand Box Gaming, who made the beautiful wooden insert for Moonshine Empire, wanted to tell you guys a bit more about it so here is a message from them:

Hello all you wonderful Moonshine backers, Sand Box Gaming here and we asked the team at Barrel Aged Games if we could hijack an update to go in more depth on the insert that we designed in collaboration with them for their game Moonshine Empire. First and foremost, we wanted to give a big shout out and congratulations for how successful their project has been so far, and we are excited to see all the support thus far, its been a great experience. We have had the pleasure of getting to know and working with Barrel Aged Games for almost a year now in preparation for this Kickstarter, and we are really proud of what we have come up with.
Each time we sit down with a game company there are three main points that we need to be able to check off while coming up with a design:
- Complete Storage Solution
- Set-up & Teardown Improvement
- Gameplay Integration
The Pappy’s Tavern insert not only is a beautiful, fully functional storage insert for your game, but was designed from the ground up having speed of set-up and teardown in mind, as well as looking to enhance the gaming experience.
When it comes to storage it is important to us that every piece, token, card, vehicle, meeple (Shiners), etc. has its own dedicated drawer or tray that protects and keeps it safe while transporting or storing your game. Our designer has done a beautiful job in taking advantage of every nook and cranny in the Pappy’s Tavern insert to fill it to the brim with drawers and containers that function both for storage and gameplay.
When it comes to gameplay set-up and teardown, typically if we have done our job right in the design of storage then this step will naturally fall in line since now there is now no longer a need for fiddling with rubber bands or Ziploc bags or other containers that we gamers like to use for makeshift storage. Plus, there is not a worry about how mixed up and jumbled the game components will be when you pull it off the shelf because you know everything is tucked away safely in its dedicated storage area. From there all it takes is to now pull it straight out of the box and place it on the table and you are ready to go, organization for the win!
Lastly, and the one step we often pride ourselves on the most, is how we can incorporate our designs into the actual gameplay in a way that will enhance the experience and increase the table presence of the game. With Moonshine Empire we knew we had a great idea on how we wanted to do this and are really excited with how it all turned out. The functionality that we have brought to the design is a fantastic feature that lends itself beautifully to many steps of gameplay, the biggest of which is the customer select and auction phases. With Pappy’s Tavern set up next to the board you have all your vehicles, money, tiles, customer and auction cards all neatly organized and easily accessible. During the customer select and auction phase you have a nice draw and discard pile ready as well as a long, almost board length card stand that lets you set out the cards up for selection or auction so all the players can easily see and read the cards. Then when you select your card all the matching components that you receive are right there in their own organized container ready for use.
